Fair Trade Community Eco Tours PDF Print

Cafe Conciencia works with our Partner Communities to offer Fair Trade Community Eco Tours.

A Fair Trade Community Eco Tour is an opportunity to spend a day, a night, a week or more with worker-owned and operated agricultural communities in southwestern Guatemala.

You will have the opportunity to...

  • Hear first-hand accounts of the histories of the communities, their struggles to obtain land and carve out a decent and dignified living for themselves against great odds.
  • Learn how coffee is grown, processed, roasted and packaged, and taste freshly roasted organic coffee produced by the communities themselves.
  • Enjoy the natural beauty of forest and mountain trails, observe native flora and fauna, take a dip in tropical waterfalls, and glimpse active volcanoes.

Please keep in mind that these projects are still in the process of development. Visitors should expect rustic conditions.

Community Eco Tours are available at:

Nueva Alianza

Nueva Alianza has a beautiful eco-lodge with private and dormitory rooms (30+ capacity), a relaxing outdoor patio with breathtaking views of the valley, a living room with TV/DVD, and kitchen and bath facilities.
Their tour program includes guided nature hikes with explanations of edible and medicinal plants and visits to waterfalls where guests can go for a swim, a conference explaining the community's history, and a tour of macadamia and coffee processing facilities.

For more information about the Nueva Alianza community, click here, or visit their own website at www.comunidadnuevaalianza.org

Santa Anita

Santa Anita's ecotourism project was started three years ago by a group of nine women in the community, five of whom remain part of a permanent work team. They have an eco-lodge with room for 15 guests.
Their tour program includes guided nature hikes and visits to waterfalls where guests can go for a swim, a conference explaining the community's history and ongoing struggle, and a tour of coffee processing facilities. Coffee grown, processed, and roasted entirely within the community is available to taste and purchase.

Booking Information

Visitors are welcome to come to either Nueva Alianza or Santa Anita at any time of year. Cafe Conciencia can not at this time provide travel arrangements from visitors' home countries to Guatemala. Visitors must arrange for transportation to Guatemala (typically a flight into Guatemala City) as well as for ground transportation to the city of Quetzaltenango (about 3-4 hours drive from Guatemala City). Once in Quetzaltenango, Cafe Conciencia can arrange private transportation to either community.
